How this site is built to be usable, what we have measured, and how to tell us when we have got it wrong.
Our position
This site is built to be usable by as many people as possible, including people using a screen reader, navigating by keyboard, or relying on magnification or high contrast.
We are working towards WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We have not commissioned an independent audit, so we do not claim conformance. What follows is what we have actually done and measured.
What is in place
- Contrast is measured rather than assumed. Body text is held at 4.5:1 or better, large text and graphical elements at 3:1 or better, and interface boundaries such as form field borders are measured against the same standard.
- Every page can be navigated by keyboard alone, and a skip link is the first thing a keyboard user reaches.
- Content hidden behind tabs and panels is removed from the focus order while hidden, rather than left as an invisible trap.
- Animation and the sections that move as you scroll stop entirely when your system asks for reduced motion.
- Colour is never the only way information is given. Status always carries a text label as well.
- Images that carry meaning have text alternatives. Images that are decoration are hidden from assistive technology rather than described.
Where we know we fall short
Stating these is more useful than claiming they do not exist.
The background video on the homepage is still placeholder footage. Anyone using reduced-motion settings, a slow connection or a data saver sees a still image instead, which is the behaviour we want, but the footage itself has not been finalised.
The site has not been tested with people who use screen readers every day. It has been built to the standard, checked with automated tools and operated by keyboard throughout, and none of that is the same thing as testing it with the people who depend on it. We would rather say so than imply a level of assurance we have not earned.
Telling us about a problem
If something here does not work for you, tell us. It is the fastest way for us to find out, and we would rather know than not.
Describe what you were trying to do and what happened, and tell us what you were using if you can. We will reply, and we will tell you whether and when we can fix it rather than letting it go quiet.
